“Baccara” means “zero” in Italian and is connected with zero-value cards in this game, namely tens, queens, jacks, and kings.
It’s believed that Falguiere created the game in Italy somewhere in the 1400s. While there’s a debate regarding its birthplace-be it France or Italy-the scales tip in favor of the latter.
